about
IF
Daedalus, a mythological inventor employed as our protagonist, ponders wistfully about who he is and where he should go. Though this stagnancy can lead to sadness, he has hope in life. I keep trying to keep waking up/ hold my gums to the sun and look up/ cause life is the love of memories. Up until now, however, something has been holding Daedalus back. When the dark comes to meet my eyes and the moon lays low and ebbs and dies all I’ve got is my crackling crinkling mind. The darkness is unknowing, an intense internal focus that leads to paralysis, the fear of external repercussions and internal guilt. Ultimately the hope of creating memories, the “if” of experience, propels Daedalus forward. Nostalgia is not only the proof of the power of memories then, but a driving force itself. His odyssey begins.
DAEDALA
Following “If” is the first of three musical passages used to transition between songs on Side A of Perdix. These transitions are notable because they musically spell out “Daedala.” The Daedala is an ancient Greek festival of reconciliation which derives its name from our protagonist, Daedalus. It is also the name for a form relic bird statue (“Daidala”) attributed to Daedalus and likely where his Greek moniker is itself derived from.
In order to musically “spell out” Daedala, Vensaire employ the Siler International Solfege. A solfege is a music education method in which different syllables correspond to different notes (do, re, mi, etc.). In the Siler International Solfege the syllables De-Da-La correspond to the notes C#-C-A. Therefore the transitions on Side A of Perdix are all variations on this three-note motif.
lyrics
i'm running real fast to/from the thought
of where i'm going & where I'm not
oh it's a constantly twisting knot
∞
if i was a sailor
you know i’d be building my boat at sea
but I'm just so afraid of sinking
∞
i'm not quite sure what i'm living for
i've swept my ashes halfway out the door
oh even my sadness is a bore
∞
yet i keep trying to keep waking up
& hold my gums to the sun & look up
cause life is The Love of Memory
∞
i find my hardships lie
in all this lazy life
that i’ve been letting myself yield to
in the bed i'm sleeping with
lays my shedding skin
& all the fortunate things i’ve got
∞
if i was an astronaut
my mind'd be full of cheese
cause i’ve got that impossible disease
∞
when the dark comes to meet my eyes
& the moon faints low & ebbs & dies
all i’ve got is my crackling crinkling mind
∞
i am a lonely man,
with my head held down
into a selfishly younger love
∞
yenning to break through every door
of every wasted floor
of that gentlemen’s only club
